At Sonar 2009, myself and my good friend Maya ventured into a little room/gallery and stumbled across this amazing producer/DJ called Nikka. Today I saw an article on her in FACT magazine online in their 'new talent' feature, and was so pleased to have come across her again.
She is based in Barcelona and her set was accompanied by an incredible visual show, so rather than any old electronic set one might dance around to, we were all seated and were lead through a visual and aural experience quite like no other.
If you ever hear of her playing somewhere, get there as soon as you can! A massive soundsystem is absolutely vital for the full effects...

One of my favourite things in life are Cupcakes...colourful ones with loads of icing, sparkles, flowers and anything else you can get on 'em! So I was overjoyed to hear of the birth of the POP BAKERY.
Cupcakes, but on sticks! Who'da thunk it eh?! They are a snip at £2.50 a 'pop' (hehe) and are so beautifully made that it would actually be a shame to eat them!

Steve Reid Tribute

Jazz Drummer Steve Reid passed away last week and Gilles Peterson and Kieran Hebden have made a tribute podcast. I went to see the Steve Reid/Four Tet colab 2 or 3 years ago and it was ridonkulous...sad to hear Steve Reid has passed away as he was an absolute don on the drums and had the energy of someone half his age!

It's the Spanish and Latin American Film Festival at the Cornerhouse in Manchester this month and they showed an AMAZING film called 'Los Anos Desnudos'. Here's the trailer, its in Spanish and couldn't find a subtitled version, but it's a snippet of what you'll see anyway...the soundtrack was amazing and the costumes were even better. It's about 3 women in the 70's making soft porn films around the time Franco's dictatorship was coming to an end, when pretty much every film had sex in it because the country had been supressed for so long.

'Hella Big': Soon To Be A Scientific Measurement?
An oft-hated slang word coined in Northern California has been proposed as a worthy entry into the field of scientific measurement when calculating enormous numbers.

Austin Sendek, a physics student at UC Davis, wants the number of 10 to the 27th power -- a trillion trillions -- to officially become "hella" big.

Along the lines of using the "kilo" prefix for kilometers or "giga" for gigabyte, Sendek is petitioning the International System of Units (SI) to use the term "hella" to describe really, really big measurements; such as the size of the universe.

"The diameter of the universe is 1.4 hellameters," Sendek said. "You know if someone says that's 'hella meters' you know exactly what they're talking about."

Under Sendek's proposed terminology, you would say the mass of the earth is six hellagrams, and the power of the sun is 0.3 hellawatts.

Physics professor Daniel Cox says he gets a kick out of the idea, but points out the number is so big, you can't use it to count the age of the universe, believed to be a measly five times 10 to the power of 17 seconds.

"Ten to the 27th [power] is about 10 billion times bigger," Cox said. "That's a hella lot of seconds."

Reactions on the UC Davis campus were mixed -- one physics student even told CBS13 she would switch majors if the proposal were accepted -- and Sendek admits that the odds of his idea gaining traction are "hella small," but he has his hopes.

"You can apply it everywhere, it's sort of a catch-all word," he added.

SI last added a prefix to the metric system in 1991, when they accepted "yotta" to describe 10 to the 24th power.
